So after battling with my Xbox One controller for over a year, it finally gave up the ghost last week… I had been toying with the idea of buying Microsoft’s new Elite wireless controller. Aimed at the hardcore gamer (definitely NOT me), the Elite can be completely remapped and customised through additional paddles, interchangeable buttons and thumb sticks.
The Elite is substantially better weighted compared to the standard controller. The additional paddles on the back of the controller takes some getting used to, and whilst aimed, and more beneficial for shooting games, I do love being able to use paddles for clutch engagement and shifting independently in Forza. I actually brought this in anticipation of Forza Horizon 3, and cannot wait to clutch kick in a SS ute in game. That’s right, in game bogan fantasies will soon be played out.
The controller itself comes with additional replacement thumb sticks, alternate D Pad key, a nice cable and a funky carry case. The controller also screams of quality with nice metal back paddles and D Pad.
So all in all this is a pretty cool controller. Downsides? It’s fucking expensive… PERIOD. At over 3x the price of a standard controller, it is very very hard to justify buying one. I get that this is aimed at the hardcore gamer, but c’mon Microsoft, poor form on the price. To add insult to injury, it is an absolute joke that, considering the price, it doesn’t have an inbuilt battery. My old controller went to shit due to battery leakage, and I hate the fact that this could occur on the Elite.
All in all, although this is a bad ass controller, I am still undecided whether or not I should’ve gotten one. I may attempt to connect it to my PC and use it for Lightroom & Premeire Pro. I will provide more in depth feedback when I get Horizon 3.
