When I was still working at EY, we had a little underground pub open up opposite us called 80 Proof. It’s a cozy 1930’s themed speak easy type american bar with awesome food and beers. Over the course of a couple of years, I had become enough of a regular there, so when a few of us decided to take the day off work and watch the Superbowl, it seemed like the best choice.
To be quite honest, this was the first NFL game I actually sat down and watched. You see I’ve never really been into NFL, and would not expect to take the day off to watch the game. However after finding out that Metin was a massive fan, along with Ron & Sujen, a plan was hatched, a booking was made and leave from work was arranged. My mate and ex colleague Tim would also join. I got up early, swung by Metin’s place and picked him up, before we parked up in the city and got to the pub. The guys at 80 gave us free hats to rep Budweiser, whilst Metin, Tim and I tucked into some wings and beers.
Sujen and Ron joined us not too long after as people kept coming in. In a matter of about an hour, the place was packed full of fans. We kicked on with the drinks and food throughout the course of the ’60 minute’ game. Hours passed as we were joined by Nikki, who was around the corner from the place. We kept eating and drinking, mates from EY joined and left as an intense game unfolded on the screens.
Finally after a good few hours, Denver Broncos won the game. The last few minutes were quite tense before the final whistle was blown. We celebrated before Metin drove back, battling thru Sydney traffic. I’m sure this will now become a yearly tradition of ours, and I cannot wait for next year!
A big thanks to Mark and the guys at 80 Proof Bar. Definitely give them a yell when you’re in the Sydney CBD next.
